Chapter 17

Tai, still on an adrenaline high, exited her Spacehawk once Hangar Bay 1 had been repressurized after bringing the starfighter to a landing, pulling off her helmet as she did so and handing it to one of the ground techs that were part of the support staff of the 122nd.

As the officer-in-charge during that battle, she had made a point of being the last one to return to Fordham, and now she surveyed the scene.

Sabre Squadron was whole—all twenty ships had survived the battle, and their pilots were disembarking from their crafts just as she had done.

She noted that Raven’s fighter had scorch marks from laser hits, and was also missing a couple of small panels on its hull, near where the stabilizers were housed.

Jane Belivet’s Spacehawk had similar damage, and it also looked like her portside wing was scarred by a laser shot that had grazed her.

During the battle, Jane had been ganged up on by three Merkonian Punishers. She acquitted herself well, though, getting out of that jam and destroying two of her pursuers before Tai had arrived to finish off the last enemy fighter.

It had been a brutal skirmish because not only did they have the Punishers to deal with, but until Fordham managed to destroy those battleships, they were being fired upon by those vessels as well. Thus, every bit of their piloting skills had been brought to bear during that fight, and she was proud of how well Sabre Squadron had performed, and grateful that they had all made it back.

The Sparrows, on the other hand, had suffered losses.

Tai had no idea what the official tally was, but she had personally witnessed three of the T-53s be destroyed by Merkonian fighters, and she was sure there were more.

On the whole, however, the Sparrows had provided some useful support for Sabre Squadron, flying and fighting much better than they had during those mock space battles several days ago.

Whether that was a result of Jefferies kicking their asses and drilling them on the simulators endlessly, or whether it was a result of the Sparrow pilots wanting to prove they were better than what they had shown during that training exercise, Tai didn’t know.

“What was that all about?” Marcia asked, coming to stand next to Tai.

“No idea,” Tai admitted.

They were far from Merkonian space. Not only that, but there was nothing in this region of the galaxy for anyone to care about.

Wait a minute…

Now that things were calm and she didn’t have Merkonians trying to blast her into stardust, she remembered something…

The comms message that had been sent to all starfighters towards the battle’s end. The one about intercepting a Merkonian transport barge that was after one of those mysterious experimental vessels.

A mysterious experimental vessel that was somehow connected to the work Lia was involved in.

No starfighter had been able to respond to the call because they were otherwise engaged.

Wait another minute…

“Tai?” Marcia prodded. “You look like you’re solving differential equations in your head.”

Tai held up a hand.
